The RCH Foundation welcomes new Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Children’s Hospital

The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Foundation would like to congratulate Dr Peter Steer who has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the RCH.

Peter is a skilled clinician with a strong focus on research, and brings with him almost three decades of leadership experience to the role. He has led other world-leading hospitals, both nationally and internationally, including the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and Children’s Health Queensland.

Ryan Brown, Chief Executive Officer, the RCH Foundation said he was excited to welcome Peter and looks forward to working with him to improve the future of children’s health.

“Strong leadership is essential to driving our shared vision for transforming paediatric healthcare. Peter’s experience and passion will undoubtedly strengthen the bond between our organisations, and further advance the incredible work we do together,” said Ryan.

As the fundraising arm of the hospital, the RCH Foundation plays a vital role in helping advance excellence and innovation across campus. Each donation helps the RCH provide the best care to patients and their families.

This year, thanks to the generosity of donors, the RCH Foundation was able to distribute $61.3 million to the RCH, supporting excellence in clinical care and equipment, research, leadership and training. Additionally, the RCH Foundation helped fund more than 200 projects across the Melbourne Children’s Campus.

When speaking with the RCH of the announcement, Peter touched on his excitement for the role.

“Throughout my life I have remained a passionate advocate for improving the quality of children’s health. I started my career as a paediatrician and this passion is at the heart of my commitment to ensure every child has access to the highest quality care.”

“The RCH is known as one of the world’s great children’s hospitals – and it will be a privilege to play a leading part in this wonderful hospital’s future,” said Peter.

The RCH Foundation would also like to acknowledge Professor Ed Oakley for his role as Interim Chief Executive Officer, with Ryan adding: “On behalf of the RCH Foundation, I would also like to thank Professor Ed Oakley for his exceptional leadership during this transitional period.”

Peter will formally commence his role at the RCH on 3 March 2025.
