When the Sheldon family established the Kyle Sheldon Memorial Fund, they did so with two hopes: to honour the life and legacy of their son Kyle, and to help ensure other families facing similar challenges receive the very best care.

Born with a rare bowel condition, Kyle underwent life-saving surgery at The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) when he was just days old, followed by 36 operations in his first three years of life. Despite ongoing medical care, Kyle embraced life with determination and optimism until he tragically passed away from an aggressive bowel cancer at the age of 26.

Inspired by Kyle’s courage, the Sheldon family and their supporters have raised more than $300,000 to support the Kyle Sheldon Memorial Fund. Their remarkable fundraising is traditionally supported through the Kyle Sheldon Memorial Golf Day, which brings together family, friends and the wider community each January to celebrate Kyle’s life and create a lasting impact for children treated at the RCH. Organised by Kyle’s brother, Joel, and his friends, the day was initially established in 2017 to get mates together to remember Kyle over a round of golf.

Today, the fund continues to support pioneering colorectal research led by Professor Sebastian King. The current project that the Sheldon’s have chosen to support is investigating a world-first, non-invasive technology known as Body Surface Colonic Mapping. This novel technique, which involves recording the motility patterns of the large bowel through the skin, aims to better understand bowel function in children with complex colorectal conditions.

By replacing or complementing more invasive investigations, this innovative approach has the potential to provide more personalised treatments, improve the quality of life for children living with bowel disorders, and establish the first benchmark of normal bowel function in children worldwide.

While we miss Kyle every day, it gives us enormous comfort to know his legacy is creating hope for other families and helping shape the future of care for children facing challenges similar to his,” said Grant, Kyle’s father.
