Raising funds for the euipment for Platypus Ward and funding for other areas of the hospital
Areas: Templestowe, Chirnside Park, Wonga Park, Croydon, Diamond Valley areas
The story so far
Templestowe Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by a dedicated group of 46 people. An important function in the early days was transporting goods and fruit for stalls and fetes to the hospital at its original site in Carlton.
In 1962 Auxiliary members started working two days a month in the Clifton Hill Opportunity Shop and in the 1970s helped in the Christmas Card Shop at St Paul’s Cathedral. We currently work 2 days a month on the Trestle Table stall, hold monthly stalls and participate in additional market days. We have 17 members including 2 Madge Tate Award winners and 7 Living Treasures recipients, with one member have an amazing 64 years service. 6 members have also received Menzies Community Australia Day Awards in recognition of their volunteer work for the RCH.
In 2003 we began sponsoring 4 Main Surgical Unit, now Platypus Ward, and have purchased numerous items of equipment. We also funded many projects over the past year including surgical treatment trolley, Chester Chest, ultrasound equipment, Immunisation Centre freezer and Children’s Cancer Centre Tissue Bank.
What we are working on
In addition to our very successful monthly stalls our major fundraiser will be Cuppa for Kids in October with 100 people attending the event in Lilydale.
Our Auxiliary has committed to 3 grants which are still to come from our account, totalling $95,000. They are: Orthopaedic Traction Equipment on Platypus Ward, Fly for the Kids (The Complex Movement Disorder Program) and Transforming Clinical Care to Improve Mental Health for RCH Patients.
A highlight for 2017 was receiving $100,000 into our account following a bequest from the late Fred Aumann who left $1.1 million to the RCH. Fred’s mother was an early member of Templestowe Auxiliary as was his sister-in-law Pat, who still donates to the Auxiliary. In May Fred’s family and friends joined auxiliary members for morning tea and a hospital tour where guests reflected on the special connection between the Aumann family through Templestowe Auxiliary.
