Raising funds to support the Ophthamology Department at the RCH.
Area: Western Suburbs
The story so far
Beyond Sight was established in 2001 by a group of parents whose children were diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called retinoblastoma, a type of cancer of the eye.
Their goal, when they began, was to raise $150,000 to purchase a Retcam – a retinal digital camera for the Ophthalmology Department. Through their fundraising events including a Trivia Night, Gala Ball/Auction, generous donations from the public and more modest fundraising activities the last financial year enabled them to fulfil their dream.
What we are working on
Fundraising activity had been quiet for Beyond Sight Auxiliary until the Valavanis family joined their ranks. Their son Sam has been battling retinoblastoma for many years with success and now sadly Sam has lost both eyes. To ensure that Sam has as many happy memories as possible stored away in his memory, Lisa, her husband and family friends put on a Family Fun Day in their local neighbourhood at Patterson Lakes. The weather was desperately unkind to them, but they raised a phenomenal amount of $25,000.
Because of the incredible efforts by members, Beyond Sight Auxiliary has been fortunate to get some great publicity which has helped to raise awareness of retinoblastoma and their cause.
