Dirty Hands Happy Hearts Auxiliary

Main funding purpose: Garden therapy program

The story so far

The Dirty Hands, Happy Hearts Auxiliary was formed in 2003. Initially, under the patronage of Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE, the objective was to create a sensory garden where patients, families and staff could enjoy and spend time outside in the fresh air whilst staying in hospital or between appointments.

This objective continues with the help of current Patron, Barbara Haynes, who provides the group with enormous support through tough times and when funding is scarce.

Funding from the Auxiliary also helps support the hospital’s Garden Program that operates two days a week and is staffed by three experienced teachers, specialising in horticulture and art, as well as a team of volunteers. The unique program, which is open to adolescents, oncology and rehabilitation patients, provides a distraction from the stress experienced inside the hospital and provides an opportunity to create, socialise and breathe in the fresh air in a beautiful, peaceful and natural environment.
